Antibody Positive Rate of Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection in Cord Blood by ELISA Method

Abstract
Cytomegalovirus(CMV) infections are worldwide in distribution and are the most common, known congenital infection in human with an incidence ranging from 0.5% to 2.2% (average 1%) of all live births.
Clinically, this congenital infection is largely inapparent in the newborn period. About 5 to 10%, of infants with congenital CMV infection are symptomatic at birth and further 10 to 20% of them may develop late sequelae, including varying degree of perceptual, neurologic, psychomotor or behavioral complications during the preschool years.
There are only reports of antibody positive rate in the age group of above one year in Korea. Therefore, this is performed to survey the incidence of congenital CMV infections in cord blood of newborns by ELISA method(IgM).
The samples for this study were 130 newborns(64 male, 66 female) who were delivered in Chung-Ang University hospital and Sung-Aae Hospital from Nov. 1985 to Mar. 1986. The result of this study is summurized as follow:
The antibody positive rate of CMV was found in only one male case of the 130 samples (0.77%).
